LaShell Ullie
Born and
raised in Paterson, LaShell, a make-up artist, attended Passaic County Technical
and Vocational School and Passaic County Community College. Diagnosed with HIV
in June 2001, he is now 31 years old. LaShell first came to CAPCO in August of 2006.
LaShell feels that his family was originally in denial about his illness.
With the help of CAPCO, LaShell has been able to educate the members of his family so that they have a better understanding
of the problems he faces.
LaShell feels that the difference CAPCO has made in his life is to give him structure and peace of mind. It has helped him to deal with the disease, especially regarding disclosure. “The
disease no longer defines who I am,” he says. “I am now confident
about living with AIDS.” CAPCO helped LaShell to get a roof over his head and to set priorities in his life. LaShell credits many of his accomplishments to his participation in CAPCO.
Because
of his transformation, LaShell is considering becoming a peer educator so that he can share his strength, hope and experience
with others. “Helping others is inspiring to me,” he states. “It makes me keep my head up. Just by reaching out and talking, you can survive.”
